Superhero Training in Superhero Breathing
Want to help children understand why to connect to their breath and how they can use it to self-calm?
This learning guide explains in simple, kid-friendly language, why your breath is magical and introduces four superhero breathing patterns children can use to self-calm.
Why the breath?
The breath is the bridge between the mind and the body, and the quickest way back to calm.
Emotions are energy in motion. They are the name we give to the thoughts and feelings we are experiencing. But sometimes feelings donโt have words. They are just strong bodily sensations that cannot easily be described. Especially when they are overwhelming. When this happens to a child, they have gone beyond what they can process and arenโt able to access the logical/verbal part of their brain. Connecting to their breath helps a child to shift their nervous system from dysregulation back into a calm, regulated state.
Teaching Superhero Breathing with the book My Friend Breath.
Through the story a child will learn four superhero breathing patterns. Each of the breathing patterns connects a child to different styles and approaches of using their friend Breath. From extended exhales to focused inhales, and creating connection between mind and body through touch and sound. These various techniques teach a child how to use their friend Breath in an empowered manner.
By using the read-along script alongside the book, you are given clear instructions on what to say, what to ask and what to do to help a child learn each breathing pattern. Also included are helpful tips on how and when to practice mindful superhero breathing with a child.
