Superhero Club Playground
Inside our virtual playground, we offer a range of superhero breathing patterns, each designed to support your child when they experience a particular emotion.
Connecting a breathing pattern to a specific emotion empowers adults and children with a common strategy they can use to help change the way they are feeling, anytime, anywhere.
Playing the say-and-do game with their friend Breath, and practicing these different breathing patterns, is a fun and easy way for your child to develop their emotional-regulation and resilience skills.
Develop your childโs emotional fitness skills through play!
Emotional-regulation and resilience are key skills needed to navigate and thrive throughout life. Our Superhero Club Playground provides an engaging way for children to develop these skills through play.
Each of the 16 superhero breathing patterns inside the playground includes a kid-friendly definition of a specific emotion. Understanding how to name the way they feel helps your child create a connection between the emotion they are experiencing, and the breathing pattern they can use to change their emotional state.
Learning the connection between their feelings and a corresponding breathing pattern will support them in many ways. For example;
When they feel frustrated they will know they can do the wombat breath.
If they are feeling silly or excited they will understand the flat tyre beath will help them to calm down, or
When they feel anxious or afraid they can use the brave breath to help gather the courage to face their challenges.
Through proactive playtime practice of the say-and-do game, children become empowered to manage any emotionally challenging situation that comes their way.

Whatโs inside the Superhero Club Playground?
By connecting a specific breathing pattern to a specific emotion, we have made it easy for both adults and children to turn to a common strategy when a child is experiencing a particular emotion.
Understanding which breathing pattern to do to best support themselves in the moment empowers a child to manage their emotions, anytime, anywhere.
Each of the 16 superhero breathing patterns inside the playground includes a kid-friendly definition of the focus emotion.
Understanding how to name the way they feel is an important step in developing the skill of emotional-regulation. It also helps your child to create a connection between the feeling they are experiencing, and the breathing pattern they can use to change their emotional state.
A follow-along demonstration video, guided by Ash and Kels, introduces the say-and-do game for each emotion, and itโs associated breathing pattern.
This game is the core strategy we use to teach emotional-regulation. It explains when and why to do each superhero breathing pattern, as well as showing a child step-by-step how to do each element of the breathing pattern.
Whatโs inside the Superhero Club Playground?
Each playtime practice video is guided by Ash and Kels. These provide an easy and fun way to help your child proactively practice, which is the key to creating the connection between a specific emotion and a breathing pattern.
The more a child practices the say-and-do game, the more likely they are to recall the breathing pattern when they are experiencing the emotional state.
Online interactive games, that cater for different ability levels, add to the fun of learning and practicing each superhero breathing pattern.
There are puzzles, memory games, memory races, spot the differences, and more! These games help to further develop a child's connection between an emotion and the corresponding breathing pattern. They also assist in the development of their concentration, attention, perseverance, comprehension, and receptive skills.
A printable guide to download and complete for offline fun and learning is included with each superhero breathing pattern.
Alongside the printable activities, this guide includes a breathing pattern poster. This poster features a QR code to provide easy access to the videos and game. Print and display in your home, office, or classroom so that children are empowered to autonomously play with their friend Breath anytime they choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Our recommended age range for our Superhero Club Playground is 3 - 10+ years old.
How your child engages with the superhero breathing patterns will depend on their age and maturity. We have found older children as well as adults have also benefited from learning the different breathing strategies offer in the MFB playground.
We do suggest that the earlier you teach your child mindful breathing the sooner they will learn how to use mindful breathing to help them regulate their emotions.
-
The more often a child practices mindful breathing, by playing the say-and-do game, the more confident they will be to turn to their breath in times of need to help change the way they feel.
Proactive breathing practice is a type of emotional fitness training. Just as other healthy fitness habits are recommended to be done daily, playing with their breath through mindful breathing should be something your child does for a few minutes on most days.
-
Both resources have a focus on the importance of proactive practice to help embed the skills of mindful breathing for emotional-regulation and resilience.
The Playtime with My Friend Breath book provides a structured storyline that your child can follow as they are guided to practice our four foundational breathing patterns for when they are feeling sad, mad, scared, and calm, to help happy feelings come their way. This book also includes a range of fun interactive activities which help your child to deepen their understanding of how and when to use these breaths.
This book comes in two formats - a generic version with Ash, and a personalized version featuring your child, which takes their engagement in the activity to the next level.
The Superhero Club Playground provides a range of different breathing patterns that, through practice, help to expand your childโs repertoire of resources that they can use to support themselves in emotional experiences.
Expanding your childโs vocabulary and understanding of the rainbow of different emotions they will encounter throughout life empowers them with a strong foundation of emotional fitness, so they feel capable of handling any challenges that come their way.

1. Play with your child
Join your child and play together in the playground.
Be creative and find moments in the day to visit the playground together.
Remembering that even if it is for as little as one to two minutes this time is still impactful in building their emotional fitness skill.
Attaching breathing playtime practice to an existing habit, e.g. their nighttime story, will help it become part of your child's daily routine.
2. Be a role model
Show what mindful breathing practice looks like, by playing say-and-do yourself.
Children are visual learners, they learn from watching. When you experience an uncomfortable emotion, show them 'in the moment' how you use your friend Breath to self-calm.
3. Set them up for success
Provide your child with easy ways to access the superhero breathing pattern webpages. This can look like:
- Printing and displaying the superhero breathing pattern poster/s in a place they can calmly and easily access for self-guided play, such as a calm corner or playroom.
- Saving the webpage as an icon on the home screen of your phone or tablet, or the favourites in your web browser, for quick access.
-
In the superhero breathing pattern descriptions we suggest that your child does each breathing pattern five times and then pauses to notice how they feel. If they need to, they can continue doing the breathing pattern until they feel calm, and their friend Breath feels calm too.
The time it takes to change how they feel can vary from day to day, experience to experience.
So it is important to encourage your child to continue to use their superhero breathing if, after pausing to check in, they are still experiencing the uncomfortable emotion.
-
Absolutely! Our My Friend Breath books and resources support and help amplify the mindful breathing and social-emotional components of other well-being programs.
If you are using the Zones of Regulation approach to teaching self-regulation our breathing patterns can be used as a support tool in each of the zones. Youโll find the specific zone included in the information on how, when and why to use the breathing pattern on their unique webpage and inside the guide.
