Superhero Training in Empathy
Looking for a way to teach your child how to show kindness to others?
Teaching children how to respond to someone elseโs emotional state in an empathic manner is the focus of this learning guide.
What is empathy?
Empathy is the ability to recognize emotions in others, to understand how someone else is feeling in a situation. To be able to โwalk in someone elseโs shoes.โ
How does My Friend Breath help to teach empathy?
Through the read-along script you can help a child learn how to recognize and understand how someone else is feeling, not only by their appearance and situation, but by noticing their breathing pattern as well.
With this awareness a child is more able to respond to someone elseโs emotional state in an empathic manner. As they see Ash showing empathy to the others in the story, children learn how they can help someone to change the way they are feeling. It's through sharing the say-and-do game and helping others to connect to the magic of their breath that a child shows their understanding of the power of mindful breathing.
By using the read-along script from this guide alongside the book, you are given clear instructions on what to say, what to ask and what to do to help develop a child's empathy. It also includes ideas of role-playing scenarios to help embed the SEL focus of empathy.
